Early indications are showing it’s going to be a busy event.

Daytime activities begin on Friday afternoon with a free to attend informal gathering at the Saab Fest Show field, show visitors are welcome to come along and chat with other Saab fans or are free to explore the retail outlets or bar and restaurants. On Saturday the show kicks off at 10am and continues through until 6.30pm when the main weekends entertainment begins at the Saab Fest Marquee. Sunday will be the best car competitions and awards ceremony on the main show field.

On Friday and Saturday, two course evening meals are available with vegetarian options at Hattons eatery which include free tea coffee. Children are catered for also, please see Driver magazine or for choices. Booking for meals will close on 9th July at midnight, so don’t delay if you’d like to join us for evening meals.

Evening entertainment is now finalised; Friday evening’s entertainment will be a general knowledge quiz with a Saab twist followed by background music to allow everyone to chat and socialise. We are thrilled to announce that our Saturday night live band is the local group ‘No Strings Attached’ who have a great play list including many rock classics. They will be supported by our very own Saab Fest DJ playing classic and modern pop music to everyone’s tastes.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Hatton in July.

Who was Erik Carlsson?

Erik Carlsson

Many new members to the Club ask the same question -  “Who is Erik Carlsson?”  I suppose a lot of people who were not around in the 60s have never heard of him even though this giant of a man is often referred to as “Mr SAAB”.

Erik was born in 1929 in Trollhattan, Sweden, not far from the SAAB factory, but at that time the factory was only producing aircraft. Erik was 20 when production of the first SAAB cars started.  His first passion was motorbikes, he bought a Norton 500 new when he was 18 from Nystrom’s where he was working. Pelle Nystrom was the Norton importer for Sweden. At weekends he took part in hillclimbs, motorcross, road racing and, during the winter, ice track racing.

News from Jim Valentine (June 2016)

With the suspension of the Roger Albert Clark Rally the Saab Historic Rally Team has been somewhat in the doldrums, not helped by my taking a sabbatical to do the Peking to Paris Rally in June/July this year.
If you would like to follow Jonathan Lodge and me on the event see where there's already a load of material about our preparations and testing in Morocco.
So to give you all plenty of time to prepare I am suggesting we put together a team of Saabs to contest the Rally Isle of Man in September, 2017 under the Saab Historic Rally Team Banner
If we can get a feel for numbers I will see what we can do as a team entry with the organisers.  So please get in touch if you would be interested.  Plenty of time to get a car ready between now and then....
If the Roger Albert runs in November 2017 we'll look to get a team entry there as well.
All the best,

Jim Valentine

North of Scotland

There is no formal Branch currently in operation (largely as a result of the sheer geographical spread of members across this area) and therefore no regular meetings.
Where possible, there is usually an  SOC 'presence' at gatherings across the region organised by other clubs, motor museums or advertised on web forums (principally UKSaabs).

The dates known so far for 2017 at which we aim to be represented are:

  • 23rd Apr    FBHVC 'Drive It Day' 2017  - various local runs (I'll be attending the one organised by the Highland Classic Motor Club, Inverness)
  • 7th May     Forres Theme Day
  • 21st May   Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire - "How Many Left" event for 'nearly classic' vehicles with fewer than 500 examples on the road
  • 27th May   Rotary Club of East Sutherland Classic Car Tour, Dornoch
  • 28th May   Vintage Day, Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore
  • 8th/9th Jul  43rd Scottish Transport Extravaganza, Glamis Castle, Angus
  • 4th/6th Aug  (TBC)  Ignition Festival of Motoring, Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow
  • 13th Aug    Historic Wheels Vintage Car Rally, Brodie Castle, Morayshire
  • 20th Aug    Royal Deeside Speed Festival, Kincardine Castle, Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire
  • 26th Aug    Fortrose & Rosemarkie Classic Vehicle Rally, Fortrose, Ross-shire.
  • 3rd Sept     Motor Mania, Grantown on Spey.
  • Early Dec    Joint SOC/UKSaabs Christmas Gathering - date and venue TBC (see UKSaabs forum for details)
