We are pleased to announce that booking for SAAB FEST UK at Bury is now open online at www.saabclubmembership.co.uk.

This year’s SOC National Weekend ‘SaabFest 2019 – Saabs @ The Burrs’ will take place at Burrs Country Park.
26-28 July 2019

Burrs Country Park, Woodhill Road, Bury, Greater Manchester, BL8 1DA.

Set in the foothills of the pennines with access to unlimited rugged open countryside yet within a mile or so of Bury’s town centre – the most northerly of Greater Manchester’s boroughs – Burrs is an ideal location for the 2019 Saab Owners club National weekend with plenty to do on-site the whole weekend for all Saab enthusiasts.

The weekend will commence Friday, 26 July 2019 for those attending the whole weekend. Friday’s activities will start with an informal gathering of vehicles on the main show field. Basic camping facilities for tents, caravans,
trailer tents or campers are available here.
Members and visitors requiring more facilities are strongly advised to book pitches on the adjacent ‘caravan and Motorhome club’ Site.
(www.caravanclub.co.uk/clubsites/england/north-west-england/lancashire/burrs-country-park-caravan-club-site/ Phone: 0161 761 0489)

Friday evening’s event will commence with a traditional Lancashire evening meal in a marquee in the garden of the Brown cow public house and will include a quiz, background music plus more to be announced. Around 100/120 diners can be accommodated.

Saturday morning – hopefully dawning fair, will see the show field open to day visitors from 10.00am. We will have the obligatory vehicle displays along with trade stands and a range of activities for everyone. Saturday’s evening meal will be provided once again in the garden of the Brown cow public house, just 100 yards from the show field! The marquee will again be provided for our meal and entertainment.
A slightly earlier start of 9.00am will open Sunday’s activities and will host the concours and best car competition, along with trade stands before wrapping up late afternoon with the awards and presentations and a
cream tea!

Menus will be published here and on the main website as soon as they are finalised and in the next issue of Saab ‘Driver’.

Who was Erik Carlsson?

Erik Carlsson

Many new members to the Club ask the same question -  “Who is Erik Carlsson?”  I suppose a lot of people who were not around in the 60s have never heard of him even though this giant of a man is often referred to as “Mr SAAB”.

Erik was born in 1929 in Trollhattan, Sweden, not far from the SAAB factory, but at that time the factory was only producing aircraft. Erik was 20 when production of the first SAAB cars started.  His first passion was motorbikes, he bought a Norton 500 new when he was 18 from Nystrom’s where he was working. Pelle Nystrom was the Norton importer for Sweden. At weekends he took part in hillclimbs, motorcross, road racing and, during the winter, ice track racing.

Motorsport

The SAAB Owners Club recognises the importance of the Motorsport heritage of the marque and provides sponsorship to those members of the club who are competing in Motorsport at various levels.

SAAB cars have been competing in motorsport since the early days of production. Many successes were achieved through drivers such as Club President, Erik Carlsson. This success continues today through Club competitors.

Club members are competing in, Historic Road Rallies, Historic Stage Rallies, Classic Runs, Sprints, Hillclimbs and many other forms of the sport.

North of Scotland

There is no formal Branch currently in operation (largely as a result of the sheer geographical spread of members across this area) and therefore no regular meetings.
Where possible, there is usually an  SOC 'presence' at gatherings across the region organised by other clubs, motor museums or advertised on web forums (principally UKSaabs).

The dates known so far for 2017 at which we aim to be represented are:

  • 23rd Apr    FBHVC 'Drive It Day' 2017  - various local runs (I'll be attending the one organised by the Highland Classic Motor Club, Inverness)
  • 7th May     Forres Theme Day
  • 21st May   Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire - "How Many Left" event for 'nearly classic' vehicles with fewer than 500 examples on the road
  • 27th May   Rotary Club of East Sutherland Classic Car Tour, Dornoch
  • 28th May   Vintage Day, Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore
  • 8th/9th Jul  43rd Scottish Transport Extravaganza, Glamis Castle, Angus
