When: 18th-20th July 2014 This event has taken place. Page retained for information only.

Where: Haw Wood Caravan Park & High Lodge Leisure, Hinton, Near Darsham, Suffolk, IP17 3QT

Please note that, although they are adjacent, High Lodge and Haw Farm are operated separately

‘Something for everyone to enjoy’ is the theme of this year’s National located in the beautiful countryside close to the Suffolk Heritage Coast.  You will all have the opportunity to take part in the various leisure and sporting activities on offer at High Lodge and to choose and enjoy the meal options available.

The location is East Anglia, near the Suffolk Heritage Coast within easy reach of Aldeburgh, Snape Maltings, Walberswick and Dunwich. It is surrounded by beautiful fields packed with wildlife and trees, offering plenty of walks and other outdoor activities. Suffolk is also home to the fashionable resort of Southwold with its pier, lighthouse and the Adnams brewery.

For those who wish to explore this beautiful and historic area of England, local members are preparing ‘self drive’ excursions to include:-

  • The market towns of Saxmundham and Woodbridge,
  • Helmingham, with its magnificent gardens surrounding a moated Tudor hall,
  • Framlingham, boasting a 12th century castle where Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England in 1553.

The return to the main venue passes by the well-established Shawsgate Vineyard, one of the best examples of East Anglia’s flourishing wine industry, which offers tours and tastings.

Alternatively a coastal tour will take in:-

  • Dunwich, a once thriving port now virtually destroyed by sea erosion,
  • The unspoilt beaches by Sizewell Nuclear Power Station where the water is always warmer,
  • Thorpeness and Aldeburgh, a town closely associated with the composer Benjamin Britten,
  • On past Snape Maltings with some lovely shops, the current venue of the Aldeburgh Festival,
  • To Orford with its castle, smokery and the possibility of a short boat trip out to the Ness.

Your return could include a visit to Bentwater’s Cold War Museum (open Sundays only) housed in a disused USAF command post.highlodge img5

Of course you can plan your own trips, for example:-

  • To nearby Southwold, the fashionable Georgian resort with its harbour, lighthouse and pier,
  • Not forgetting the Adnams Brewery,
  • While further afield is the excellent transport museum at Carlton Colville just south of Lowestoft housing a fabulous collection of old trams, buses and numerous other service vehicles.

Back at the venue on Sunday there will be the beauty contest and prize giving plus further opportunities to meet and chat with both new and old friends and fellow Saabists.

Talking of beauty, it is possible to arrange Pamper Parties at High Lodge (for those who don’t want to spend the entire weekend under the bonnet).  For those who like some retail therapy, nearby Norwich and Ipswich offer wide and varied shopping opportunities.

The Haw Wood Farm Caravan Park offers excellent camping facilities and will be the base for activities such as the car displays, trade tents and spares/swap shops.  For those who would like a self-catering option there are two, four and six berth lodges available for hire next door, at High Lodge.  The area offers great walks locally and some lovely lanes for cycling. The overnight camping and caravan park is quiet, with spacious pitches for a relaxing time and is but a short walk away from the activity centre. For members staying here, there are modern amenities including a cafe, shower and toilet block, disabled facilities and a small well stocked shop.

The park regularly holds ‘star gazing weekends’, as the area is particularly free from light interference and reputably has the clearest skies in Britain. In addition there will be a welcome fish and chip supper on the Friday evening, an event BBQ on the Saturday, a car beauty competition on the Sunday. For those wishing to enjoy a roast lunch prior to departure, this will also be available on Sunday at High Lodge.

Entrance is a bargain at £3 per day for Members and £6 per day for Non-Members.  Meals are available from Highlodge. There are a variety of activities such as Clay pigeon shooting, Air Rifle and Archery and we have negiotiated special prices from High Lodge for these.

Please note: to encourage early booking a small gift will be included for the first 20 received.

 National Rally 2012

national1294s

Thanks to everyone who turned out and supported our National Rally at Wicksteed Park. It proved to be a very popular location with the biggest attendance for some time.

We counted well over 200 cars on Saturday and 150 on Sunday, plus a whole load of us camping as well.

The range of cars was just fantastic, from a 1952 92B to a 2010 9-5 and including six Sonetts! Erik Carlsson said that he had not seen such a great line up of Saabs for a long time and that he thoroughly enjoyed himself.

The weather was kind to us too.

Thanks also to everyone who helped us leading up to and during the weekend. We could not have done it without you.

A warm welcome to all of the new members that joined our Club over the weekend.

Saturday 13 April
Stuart Turner in conversation with Erik Carlsson
Erik Carlsson is a man for whom the word ‘legend’ might have been invented - a Saab driver from the 1950s until he retired in 1967, and a company spokesman for the next thirty years, Erik is the most famous of all Scandinavian and Saab rally drivers.
Having met Pat Moss in European motorsport in the late 1950s, the two rapidly became inseparable - when Erik was not driving Saabs in events, he was often to be seen driving BMC ‘chase cars’ at the time – and they were married in 1963.
Even after his rallying days were long gone, Erik would occasionally take out a ‘works’ Saab in front of the media, and set incredibly competitive times on special stages in testing. Even in the 1970s, when alighting from cars like the 99 Turbo, on such occasions, he would ease his creaking back, grin, and then quip : ‘Not bad …. for old man ….’
Erik will be in conversation with Stuart Turner who was co-driver with Erik on his first RAC Rally win and later, when running the BMC Competitions Department, tried hard but unsuccessfully, to bring Erik into the BMC team.
All Evenings are held in the Lecture Theatre of the Collections Centre from 7.30pm. The Museum is open from 6.00pm (at no extra charge). A pay bar is available for the purchase of beers, wines, soft drinks and tea & coffee. We regret we are unable to provide food.
Tickets may be purchased from Theresa Browning, National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, Hampshire, SO42 7ZN, Tel: 01590 614792, email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Erik and Stuart have very kindly agreed to award the 2012 Saab Historic Rally Team trophies at the end of the event, come and find out who won what:
  • The Erik Carlsson Trophy for best performance
  • The Triple Trophy for outstanding support from the service crews
  • The Expensive Noises Trophy

Ebor Saab Scottish Mystery Weekend May 2019

ebor saab scottish mystery weekend may 2019 1 20190529 190050204414 Ebor Saab members set off on Friday 10 May to make their separate ways to the assembly point at Gretna Green for what was billed as a Scottish Mystery Weekend, the mystery being only the organisers knew the itinerary. The mystery began to unfold on Saturday morning with a drive along gloriously empty roads under blue skies up into rural Scotland to visit the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Temple at Eskdalemuir (nobody expected a visit the foothills of the Himalayas).

North of Scotland

There is no formal Branch currently in operation (largely as a result of the sheer geographical spread of members across this area) and therefore no regular meetings.
Where possible, there is usually an  SOC 'presence' at gatherings across the region organised by other clubs, motor museums or advertised on web forums (principally UKSaabs).

The dates known so far for 2020 at which we aim to be represented are:

  • 26th Apr           FBHVC 'Drive It Day' 2020  - various local runs (I'll be attending the one organised by the Highland Classic Motor Club, Inverness)
  • 9th May            Inverness Classic Vehicle Show - on the streets of Inverness with Parade finale led by pipe band
  • 10th May         Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire - "How Many Left" event for 'nearly classic' vehicles with fewer than 500 examples on the road
  • 23rd May         Rotary Club of East Sutherland Classic Car Tour, Dornoch
  • 11/12th Jul      46th Scottish Transport Extravaganza, Glamis Castle, Angus (see UKSaabs forum for details)
  • 9th Aug            Historic Wheels Vintage Car Rally, Brodie Castle, Morayshire
  • 31st Aug          Fortrose & Rosemarkie Classic Vehicle Rally, Fortrose, Ross-shire.
  • 6th Sept           Motor Mania, Grantown on Spey.
  • 19th Sept         'Wheels of Nairn', Nairn Links
  • Early Dec          Joint SOC/UKSaabs Christmas Gathering - date and venue TBC (see UKSaabs forum for details)
