900

The Classic 900

The Classic 900 was produced from 1978 – 1993, in both Sweden and Finland, and is known for its distinctive design, innovative engineering and performance. It featured a unique combination of style and functionality, with iconic hatchback shape, high build quality, distinctive wrap around windscreen, and a front hinged, clam shell – style bonnet. The 900 was at the forefront of safety, incorporating a ridged safety cell crumple zones and side – impact protection. Over its lifetime, the 900 was offered in various body styles – 3 and 5 door hatchbacks, 2 and 4 door saloons and a convertible. It was available with both normally aspirated and turbocharged engines, initially with 8 valves and then, phased in from 1984, 16 valves. The most powerful engine, with 16 valves and an intercooler had 175bhp (although the Carlsson special edition had 185bhp by adjusting the ECU). The 900 received a face-lift in 1987, gaining a sloping front end and commonality with the 9000 braking system and wheel hubs. It is now rightly regarded as a classic, with unique design and engineering.
