The Saab 9000 was built between 1984 and 1998 and was the last Saab to be produced without input from General Motors. It was developed in collaboration with Fiat, Lancia and Alpha Romeo, whose equivalents were the Croma, Thema and 164, respectively. Thus, the familiar Type 4 designation came into being. Originally a hatchback, it was joined by a booted Saloon in 1988. The 9000 had typical Saab focus on safety and driver engagement, together with a spacious interior, high quality materials, advanced ergonomics and practicality. A comprehensive facelift to front and rear took place in 1992, along with many other chassis and body upgrades. Engines were transversely mounted 2 and 2.3 litre 4-cylinder units either normally aspirated or turbocharged, and based on those found in the contemporary 900 – again, they were continuously developed. A major innovation was the introduction of Saab Direct Ignition (using a cassette of 4 coils situated above the spark plugs) which made the distributor redundant. When production ceased in 1998, it was replaced by the 9-5.
