The Saab Sonett was manufactured between 1955 and 1957 (Sonett I) and again between 1966 and 1974 (Sonett II and III). Sonett I (Saab 94) was introduced in 1956 and was powered by a 748 cc 2 stroke engine. It was a lightweight open 2-seater and was based on aircraft design philosophy. However, various circumstances meant that a planned production run of 2000 faded and only 6 cars were built between 1955 and 1957. This is the rarest of Saabs.Â
Sonett II (Saab 97) was based on a previous development car and had no link to Sonett I. It was a fibreglass-bodied 2 seat coupe and was powered by a 2-stroke engine. Production commenced in 1966, but only approximately 250 were built before Saab made the decision to replace the engine with the V4 from the Saab 96. This installation required a bonnet modification to incorporate a bulge.Â
Sonett III was a Swedish/Italian redesign of Sonett II and was launched in 1970. This stylish 2 seat coupe ceased production in 1974 due to disappointing sales.Â
